Double Take: The Music of Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw

Trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw were at the height of their careers when they recorded Double Take together on Blue Note in 1985. Nevertheless, the pairing was a historic one. For Hubbard, it marked the first time recording for the Blue Note label since 1965. For Shaw, who owed much of his innovative harmonic language to Hubbard, it represented an opportunity to pay homage to a mentor. The results were so well received the pair returned to the studio two years later for the sequel, The Eternal Triangle. Two of Cleveland’s leading trumpeters, Tommy Lehman and Mark Russo, revisit this historic encounter with the help of drummer Chris Hovan, pianist Jonathan Hooper, and bassist Taylor Arbogast for a new project named after the iconic first album from Hubbard and Shaw.
Both Lehman and Russo are active on the Northeast Ohio jazz scene. Tommy Lehman regularly leads his own ensembles featuring his talents both as a composer and trumpeter. Mark Russo, a leading educator, has been featured with the The Avenue and the Skatch Anderson Orchestra, in addition to leading his own groups. Chris Hovan has been heard with many Northeast Ohio artists including Bob Niederriter and The Jazz Shepherds. His own groups include an organ trio and a quartet featuring Russo that also boasts the talents of Arbogast and guitarist Chandler Carpenter. Taylor Arbogast has been active with a variety of up-and-coming leaders including Grant Heineman, Ronell Regis, and Eric T. Everett. Jonathan Hooper is as much at home playing solo gigs in the area as he his supporting artists such as Bonefide and Shannon Eller.
